Laser Nail Fungus Treatment

Laser toenail fungus treatments

Laser Nail Fungus Treatment is a non-invasive procedure used to treat nail fungus.

Onychomycosis or Tinea Unguium is the medical term for fungal infection of the nail or the nail plate. Onychomycosis infections cause nails to become thick, discolored, and unsightly. Elite Doc Health and Beauty can eliminate your nail infection and help your nails regain their clarity. Laser devices emit pulses of energy that impart heat to tissues that it contacts. The laser therapy works by utilizing a specific wavelength of light that passes through the nail and the surrounding tissue. The light is absorbed by pigment in the fungi, which causes it to heat and kill or damage the fungal organism.

The laser treatment does not harm healthy tissue, and most patients do not report any discomfort either during or after the procedure, so no anesthesia is needed. The staff at Elite Doc Health and Beauty are experienced in treatment of nail fungus of the toe nails and finger nails.

Treatments are repeated approximately every 90 days until the infection is cured. Nails are debrided prior to the first treatment and will be debrided six weeks following each laser therapy. Patients are prescribed a topical antifungal medication that should be applied to the nails daily. It usually takes six to nine months to totally cure nails.

How does the laser treatment work?

The laser therapy works by using a specific wavelength laser light that passes through the nail and the surrounding tissue. The laser light is absorbed by pigment in the fungi, which causes it to heat and kill or damage the fungal organism. This results in your nail growing out normally.

Is the laser treatment painful?

The laser treatment does not harm healthy tissue, and most patients do not experience any significant discomfort either during or after the procedure. You may, however, experience a mild warming sensation or periodic pin prick sensations that may last a fraction of a second. No anesthesia is needed.

How often is treatment performed?

Treatment is performed every three months until there has been a cure. An aggressive debridement of the nail is performed prior to the 1st treatment and is recommended to be performed 6 weeks following each laser therapy. Topical anti-fungal medicine is recommended to be applied to the nails daily. It may take up to 6-9 months before the nail is cured of the infection.
